When designing a website, the first thing to understand is the target audience and also the parameters of the design. On our own site we have, what we call, the 'dead snail' with his buddies on the top left (ask the consultant where this comes from, there is a story!), this suits our own site but would be out of place if our client was a financial institution.
A website should be as colourful as possible with at least one unique feature; it may be the navigation, the graphics, layout or something else. This feature will ensure that the user remembers your site and 'bookmarks' it in their head. Long gone are the days of the traditional layout and it is now possible to be much more diverse with regard to design.
Some of the key points to follow when making a website:
- Pick a memorable domain
- Help visitors to find what they search for
- Build a good navigation
- Utilise CSS as much as possible
- Determine screen parameters to use
- Select effective background colours
- Use relevant and realistic graphics
- Make the important parts of the site stand out from the rest
- Make the text easy to read and adaptable
- Serve information in bite sized chunks
- Determine load speed and optimum speed form target audience
